February Featured Athlete – Alexis of Fit Lexy’s Kitchen

This month our featured athlete is Alexis from Fit Lexy’s Kitchen.  Alexis is a personal trainer, spin instructor and holds down a full time day job (not to mention writing a popular blog), so we thought she was a great example of how to balance a busy, but fit-focused, healthy lifestyle.  Check out our interview below where she shares her workouts, daily meals and one of her favorite recipes!
Fit Lexy's Kitchen

Alexis, welcome to the blog! In a nutshell, give our readers an idea of who you are and what you do in the world.

Thank you for having me ProCakes! My name is Alexis and I have lived in the Bay Area my entire life. I have always had a healthy active lifestyle, with my parents being my inspiration. Who funny enough met at a weightlifting competition after each winning their own classes, since then they have been absolutely inseparable and my role models.

I decided to start Fit Lexy’s Kitchen after years of watching and learning how to cook delicious healthy food from my parents. So as I began sharing and cooking recipes for friends, family, or just experimenting in the kitchen over time, I became more and more obsessed with the idea to start a blog. Fit Lexy’s Kitchen is all about fast healthy delicious meals.

From your blog I gather you have always been active. Have you ever gone through a time where you totally lost your fitness mojo? If so, how did you get past it?

Of course and I think most people go through losing their fitness mojo one time or another. It’s normal and it’s hard to be consistent, power through long days, or other curveballs life throws at you. The most recent time I lost my mojo was when I went to visit my family in Greece last year. We were there for about 21 days and right from the start I had no motivation to go to the gym (I think I might of worked out 5 days on the entire trip). Instead of getting down, I rewarded myself for all the hard work I put in leading up to the trip with this much deserved time off.

IMG_5324So by the time the trip ended and we returned to the states I was so excited to get back in the gym. I still remember my first workouts back were absolutely amazing, I couldn’t believe how refreshed, energized and focused I felt. My piece of advice, if you have lost your mojo take a few days off to decompress and relax. Sometimes all you need is one extra day and instantaneously you are back and in the game!

You have so many incredible healthy recipes on your website! Do you have a nutritional philosophy or approach to eating that you stick with?

My approach to eating is everything in moderation while enjoying sticking to the healthy options. Through my fitness journey I have learned a lot and not every one is the same and therefore you need to experiment to see what works best for you and your results. I have mostly adopted the a clean diet, which means I try to stay away from heavily processed foods. I always make sure to pack in tons of fresh vegetables and good sources of protein. But, that’s not to say I don’t indulge in the delicious stuff once in a while. I love desserts, so if I am really craving for that treat, I’ll have some in moderation of course. Just don’t overthink your food, eat a healthy diet, and make sure to throw in lots of variety so you don’t get bored and most of all enjoy it!

Um, speaking of your recipes – can we have one? Give us your all time fav!

Yes! I am addicted to oatmeal and I look forward to this meal everyday! I love sweet things so starting off my day with a big warm bowl of Peanut Butter Oatmeal is my absolute favorite!

Yes! I am addicted to oatmeal and I look forward to this meal everyday! I love sweet things so starting off my day with a big warm bowl of Peanut Butter Oatmeal is my absolute favorite!

  •  ⅓ cup of Rolled Oats,
  • 1 ⅓ cup of Water,
  • 1 cup of Egg Whites,
  • 1 scoop of Whey Protein Powder (PB Flavor, is my favorite),
  • 1 TBSP of Natural Chunky Peanut Butter
  • ⅓ cup of blueberries.

In a medium sauce pan over medium heat pour in rolled oats and water to cook until water has mostly been soaked up. Next, pour in egg whites and stir constantly until white and fluffy. Turn off heat and add in a scoop of protein powder. Transfer for a bowl and top with Peanut Butter and blueberries. Enjoy with a cup of coffee!

Favorite brand of workout gear?

I am definitely a Lululemon girl. They just have such great quality and all their pieces are so beautiful! But, my second favorite brand is definitely Nike!

Paint us a picture of your diet and fitness regime. What does any given day look like for you?

Like most people I have a hectic schedule, I work for a start up, maintain a social life, and try to balance everything else in life. But, I always make working out and eating healthy a priority. Good thing I am such a morning person, because on a given day I am at the gym at 5:20am. If I am working out arms I normally do a 30 minute cardio session followed by 30 minutes of lifting and abs. If it’s leg day my workouts are normally an hour of just heavy lifting. I try to do between 4-5 different exercises with 4-5 sets at 15 reps each for each muscle group.

For my diet I normally eat 4-5 small meals a day, which has worked very well for me because I am such a snacker. All my meals are well balanced between protein, fats, and carbs. I do somewhat follow a IIFYM program, but I tend to stay with clean foods rather than processed. When I eat processed foods I tend to feel bogged down or bloated, so I tend to stay away. I love variety in foods, so I am always switching up my proteins (chicken, lamb, steak, fish, eggs), fats (olive oils, nut butters, avocados), and carbs (whole wheat breads, oatmeal, rice cakes, sweet potatoes) to keep me interested and always loaded up my plate with tons of fresh vegetables or fruits. On a regular basis I enjoy eating healthy and exercising everyday, it’s my passion. Living a healthy lifestyle is not only a great stress reliever, but your body will work better mentally, emotionally, and physically.

Cardio – yay or nay?

Yay! I love a good sweat and it’s a great way to shock your body. I tend to do cardio about 3-4 days a week for 30 minutes switching between the bike, stairmaster, treadmill, HIIT, and hiking.

Put your personal trainer hat on now and tell us your thoughts on the most effective way to lose weight and keep it off?

This brings me back to when I first got into fitness. I was like most girls and was obsessed with cardio, I was either on the treadmill or stairmaster for at least an 1 ½ hours a day. But, I never saw the results or firmness I was looking for, it wasn’t until I started weight training consistently 5-6 days a week I saw the results I wanted.

Weightlifting along with a combination of cardio and of course eating healthy clean food is what I found to be the most effective way to lose weight and keep it off. Make sure to switch up your workouts between group classes and individual sessions to not only keep your body guessing, but so you don’t lose your fitness mojo. Nutrition plays even a bigger role in weight loss, eating a well balanced meal between good sources of proteins, with lots of water, fresh fruit, complex carbs, and fats is incredibly beneficial. Don’t be afraid to experiment, you will be surprised how delicious and healthy some recipes can be.

Real quick to wrap things up… latest obsession? (Anything goes!)

I would have to say I am obsessed with two things right now. Infinity scarves because I love how warm and cozy they are without burying yourself in layers and with it always being cold in San Francisco they are the perfect trendy scarf. Then there’s the treadmill desk at my work, I love this thing! I hate sitting down for long periods of time, so this is the perfect way to getting some additional gym time while working. I tend to use it a few days a week for at least an hour and can’t believe how time flies when I am on it.
